Founded in the late 1810s on the Alabama River, the city of Montgomery grew rapidly to become the capital of the state just 27 years later, in 1846. The Confederacy chose Montgomery as its official national capital in 1861. The city remains today a strong bastion of Southern fervor. Yet Montgomery has come a tremendous distance in terms of recognizing civil rights and integrating its black and white populations. Today, Montgomery is a major regional hub for the high-tech industry, and it boasts a large military presence as well as a thriving, diverse cultural life.

The Montgomery Symphony and Montgomery Ballet have been gaining wide acclaim over the past several years. The Jubilee City Fest, Alabama Highland Games, and so-called “Zoo Boo” attract diverse crowds from all over the South. If you are in the mood for superior theater, don’t miss Montgomery’s annual Alabama Shakespeare Festival. You can also tour the State Capitol (built just four years after the city was designated Alabama’s epicenter) as well as the first White House of the Confederacy. Don’t forget to check out the thriving Montgomery Flea Market or the South Eastern Livestock Rodeo.
